About us


ABC (Advanced Biotechnology Center) is the natural palindromic acronym
of the Italian name
Centro Biotecnologie Avanzate (CBA).

It was established on 27 April, 1993, as a non-profit consortium and acquired its legal status on 9 October, 1997 by a ministerial decree of the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR).

The Advanced Biotechnology Center is under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR).

The ABC Consortium is composed by the following institutions:

Università di Genova

Istituto Nazionale per la Ricerca sul Cancro (IST)

Istituto Superiore di Oncologia

Ente Ospedaliero Ospedali Galliera



Besides representatives of the associated institutions, the Board of Directors of ABC is composed by the President and by delegates of the Italian Ministry of Health, the MIUR and the Ministry of Economic Development.

The Auditors’ Committee is composed by representatives of the MIUR, the Regione Liguria and the University of Genova.

The institutional goal of ABC is to foster research, development and innovation, to develop services and to perform post-graduate training in the Life Science and Technology field, focusing its resources on activities which target industry and production.

To this aim, the ABC resources are used to:

promote, organize and develop in-house research in biotechnology and nanobiotechnology;
carry out studies and researches in the biotechnology area for public institutions, private and public companies;
provide technical assistance and support to public administrations and institutions, national and international private and public companies;
promote, organize, set up and develop technical, scientific and logistic services in the biotechnology area.

At present, ABC hosts, in about 2.000 sqm,12 laboratories and 3 SMEs whose mission and activities are inherently complementary to those of the research teams. Currently the major areas of investigation and innovation, financially supported by Regione Liguria as a recipient of state-funded intergovernmental programs, are: a) Drug discovery and delivery, b) Immunobiotechnology, c) RNA technologies, d) Stem cells, e) Biomolecular “in vivo” imaging, f) Marine biotechnologies.
